Icons: Back to Madison

Icons: Back to Madison inaugurated Sotheby’s new global headquarters at the Breuer Building on Madison Avenue and marked Sotheby’s return to Madison Avenue for the first time since 1980. The presentation brought together 25 works and was described by Sotheby’s as a dialogue between past and present, reflecting the evolution of style, collecting, and the art market.

MDRN Elements Studio was commissioned to create the surface environments on which works were presented in select institutional and editorial settings, including Sotheby’s Icons: Back to Madison

These references reflect the studio’s role in shaping the atmosphere around culturally significant works, while the work itself remains the center of attention.

During the pandemic, when the museum was closed and audiences were confined to their homes, The Met and Verizon envisioned a virtual experience that would let visitors explore the museum from their computers. The concept was simple and powerful: if you cannot go to the museum, we will bring the museum to you.

MDRN Elements Studio responded with a conceptualized presentation built around the idea of art moving boxes, transport crates reimagined as cultural vessels, designed to hold and reveal the experience of the museum through the app. The result translated the language of art transportation in a sense of presentation. Concept, design, and hand built by MDRN..
